If we can't blow the hurricane up...

REMINDER: TAD AND CRAIG'S EXCELLENT PARTY IS THIS WEEKEND IN STERLING, VIRGINIA. DETAILS AT  https://barkingmad.org/ Last week during BSR we discussed reports that administration officials had inquired whether we could destroy a hurricane by dropping an H-Bomb on it. Here is a bit of background on that ridiculous concept: Can a nuclear bomb stop a hurricane? No, it’s a myth that has persisted for decades - from Politifact Florida https://www.politifact.com/florida/article/2019/aug/26/can-nuclear-bomb-stop-hurricane-no-its-myth-has-pe/ How the U.S. Military Could Stop a Hurricane: Destroy it with a Nuclear Weapon? - National Interest https://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/how-the-us-military-could-stop-hurricane-destroy-it-nuclear-22624 And an old favorite... Why don't we try to destroy tropical cyclones by nuking them ? - NOAA https://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/C5c.html After an intensive investigation, Bomb Shelter Radio is now aware of a new plan to spar...

Apollo at 50

Life is a bit crunchy now, but it isn't time to share that with you all.  Instead, let me remind everyone that Apollo 11 lifted off 50 years ago today. You can follow the mission "live" at  https://apolloinrealtime.org/11/ or watch the original CBS TV Broadcast, see https://paleofuture.gizmodo.com/cbs-news-is-livestreaming-the-original-apollo-11-launch-1836406428 for details. Because of events celebrating man landing on the Moon, the show on July 18th, 2019 is tentative. Watch social media for further updates. Cheers, Illya

A brief bit of joy in the morning...

Animation of the Diamond Cubic structure, from Wikipedia  https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diamond_cubic_animation.gif There isn't a lot of joy in commuting, or in being a member of the daily grind set. You have to dig for bright spots, like diamonds scattered and hidden among the dust. Today featured one of the few bright spots in my morning. After a long commute, I get to the escalator out of the dark and dusty Metro and hear the wonderful bright voice of Emma G performing at 7th and Maryland SW in DC. She always bring a smile to my face. I highly recommend checking out her music at  https://www.emmagmusic.com/ In unrelated news... Per normal, there will be another ridiculous episode of Bomb Shelter Radio this evening, 8PM in the usual place. Check out http://bomb.shelter.radio.am/ for details. In related news... BSR on 7/18/2019 is now tentative. Next week is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing , and we hope to attend som...

Somewhere Near The Lincoln Memorial... PART 2

CSX Transportation moving Armor to DC (Photo Credit: CSX Twitter) Over the past few days, a lot of Military and Civilian workers were asked to sacrifice their time to support a "Dog and Pony" show on the National Mall. For that, and many other things, I say thank you. As for the "Dog and Pony" show, now I understand why historical markers near my hometown point out that Benedict Arnold planned to give up West Point and the nearby Stewart Airfield to the British during the Revolutionary War (snicker) #RevolutionaryWarAirportStories .
